Google and Motorola announced a big step for Project Fi a few weeks ago. The new Moto X4 will be the first “Android One” device in the US, as well as the first non-Google device on Project Fi. It’s just not either of those things quite yet.
The phone was supposed to be shipping around now, but customers are being notified of a delay of several weeks.
Moto X4, which is launching in the US as an Android One smartphone on Project Fi, is apparently experiencing a production delay which is causing units to be delayed about 2 weeks, and should be heading out to those that pre-ordered between October 18th and the 25th.
This is according to a user on Reddit who posted the email that was sent to them regarding their order. The Moto X4 was originally supposedly to be landing in users hands as early as this week, but it appears that is being pushed back now, by at least a week, but more than likely, two weeks.
One customer took to Reddit to share an email that they received from Project Fi, and in that email the following message is present:
“Thanks for ordering a new Android One Moto X4 from Project Fi. A production delay has impacted the estimated ship date for your new device, and your device should ship between 10/18 and 10/25. You’ll receive a separate shipping confirmation as soon as your order ships. If you have already planned to trade in another device with your order, you’ll still have a full 30 days to send in your old phone after you receive your Android One Moto X4.”
As usual with production delays, Google nor Motorola has gone into detail about why exactly the Moto X4 is being delayed. With it being a production delay and this being Motorola’s first glass-backed smartphone, it could be the fact that it is running into issues with making the glass back for this phone. Since it’s not something that it has used with its other devices. Of course, that’s just a hunch. This is a bit of a set back, especially for those that were hoping to replace their devices this week with a shiny new Moto X4. It looks like users will need to wait a bit longer.
Motorola and Lenovo unveiled the Moto X4 at its IFA press conference back in September. After nearly two years since the previous Moto X, the Moto X4 was announced and it appears to be the company’s mid-range offering.
It has a 5.2-inch 1080p display, powered by the Snapdragon 630 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It does have a dual-camera around back, where there is a 12-megapixel sensor and then an 8-megapixel sensor in addition to that. This is all powered by a non-removable 3000mAh battery that does support Quick Charge 3.0, so users are able to quickly charge up the Moto X4.
In the US, the Moto X4 is an Android One smartphone on Project Fi, so that means it is running stock Android and no Alexa. Apparently, Alexa will be on devices outside of the US, which is interesting since Alexa is only available in a handful of markets outside of the US anyways.
Customers that pre-ordered the Android One Moto X4 and chose expedited shipping were originally supposed to have their phones delivered at some point this week, but they’ll now have to wait an extra one or two weeks before actually getting their hands on their new gadget.
