Google’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have had a tough time since their launch with a number of complaints being leveled at them. Thankfully, Google isn’t ignoring customer complaints and has been working on fixes. According to several people running the second Developer Preview of Android 8.1, it appears that Google has rolled out a patch that addresses a weird microphone bug that created audio distortion when capturing video.
Android 8.1 Developer Preview 2 arrived yesterday delivering a slew of optimizations and bug fixes; among them was a fix for one of the Pixel 2 XL’s longest-standing problems. As pointed out by users on Reddit, the audio static issue that plagued Pixel 2 XL video recordings now seems to have been addressed.
The person who started the Reddit thread provided ‘before and after’ samples to show the difference, before other users have chimed in to confirm that the problem has been resolved for them too. Watching and listening to these, there is a clear difference in audio quality. This doesn’t seem to be a fluke, either, as dozens of other users have commented about the fix working on their Pixel 2 and 2 XL handsets.
On November 1, Orrin, a Community Manager for the forums, commented to let people know that Google had identified the bug and would roll out a fix “in a future OTA update.” Almost a month later, and it appears that Google has finally included the patch in the second and final Android 8.1 Developer Preview.
In other good news is, you no longer need to sideload the factory images to install the Developer Preview 2 — it’s now rolling out OTA for those on the Android Beta program. It weighs in at 118.9MB for the 6P, 186.2MB for the Pixel 2 XL, and probably some number in that vicinity for other supported devices.
If you can’t wait for the OTA rollout, you can grab a factory image and manually install it. Factory images are available for download at the links below
