Portrait mode was the most wanted feature for Nexus and Pixel 2016 users. Thanks to the Camera NX developer, Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X owners can now enjoy taking portrait mode photos.
However, the Camera NX developer apparently managed to find enough bits in the camera software that enables portrait mode in new Pixel 2 phones to create a new Camera NX app that also works on older Google phones.
First, download and install the APK. Then, open the Camera NX app which looks just slightly different compared to the Google Camera app icon. After that, the interface should look almost identical to other versions of the Google Camera app.
“Unfortunately, at this time, it appears as though portrait mode is only working when the camera app can identify a human face. While the Pixel 2 can create the depth of field look around almost any object, my attempts at taking a portrait mode photo of inanimate objects around my house with the Pixel XL failed.”
“Camera NX V7.3 is based on Google Camera 5.1.016, why not the latest 5.1.018 version? because they are the same app with different version numbers.”
