Xiaomi’s Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus smartphones launched at an event in Beijing on Thursday.
As you can see in pictures, the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus bring a very 2017-style 18:9 design to the Redmi line, with rounded corners and thin bezels on the top and bottom of the screen.
Around the back there’s a fingerprint sensor and a single camera, and the phone’s body is made from aluminium. It comes in blue, pink, gold, and black.
Here are the rest of the specs:
All of the physical keys will be placed on the right-hand side of the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. Now, as far as specs are concerned, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is expected to be a bit smaller than the Redmi 5 Plus, as it’s expected to sport a 5.7-inch HD+ (1440 x 720) display.
This phone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 450 SoC, if rumors are to be believed, and it will arrive in both 2GB and 3GB RAM variants, both of which are rumored to sport 32GB of native storage.
A 12-megapixel main snapper will be included, as will a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. A 3,300mAh non-removable battery will probably be included in this package as well.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus will arrive with a 5.99-inch fullHD+ (2160 x 1080) display, along with 3GB / 4GB of RAM and 64GB of native storage. The phone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 625 64-bit octa-core processor, and it will also sport a 12-megapixel camera on the back.
It will sport a 4,000mAh non-removable battery. A 5-megapixel shooter will be included on the phone’s front side, while both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will ship with Android Nougat, and MIUI 9 on top of it.
These are definitely inexpensive phones by global standards, then, with the 5 Plus sounding like particularly good value. The Snapdragon 625 is a solid processor with great power efficiency, especially when paired with such a large battery, and an 18:9 full-HD display is impressive at this price point.
Xiaomi Redmi 5 price is CNY 799 (roughly Rs. 7,800) for the 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage variant, while the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant is priced at CNY 899 (roughly Rs. 8,800) or ($120/$135).
The Redmi 5 Plus price is CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 9,700) for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant, while the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant price is CNY 1,299 (roughly Rs. 12,700) or ($150/$195).
The phones have only been announced for China so far and will be available on December 12th.
